Martin Dixon Employees Set For 160 Mile Charity Bike Challenge

They spend their day-to-day working lives ensuring others get maximum efficiency and performance from their energy reserves - but now it's time to see if they can put that theory into practice themselves.

A team of employees Martin Dixon Ltd are preparing to take to the road on their bikes this weekend, hoping to compete a 160-mile-long course in aid of two local charities.

Business founder Martin Dixon, 51, will head a 15-strong team, which also includes employees Mike Willard, 63, Chris Smith and Rob Bartle, both 30, as they attempt to cycle from St Helens to Hull.

Their two chosen charities, Dove House Hospice and Life for a Kid, are set to split proceeds of around £10,000 from the challenge and a charity golf day and gala dinner also organised by the business, which is being held next Friday.

Mr Dixon says raising a five-figure sum will make the pain he expects to be suffering from come Sunday evening worthwhile.

But he admits to being a little concerned as the challenge approaches, given none of his team are regular bikers, and the most any has completed so far in training is 50 miles.

"We haven't trained together yet, it's enough that we work together," joked Mr Dixon.

"We all know it's not going to be easy, and there'll be times over the two days when we will be wondering what we have let ourselves in for, as it's fair to say we are no spring chickens.

"I've been training on and off for about three months, and I'll only know whether it has been enough when we come to the end of our first night, when we hope to have covered at least 80 miles. If we haven't, we're in trouble.

"Hopefully we'll enjoy some good banter on the way as we go, and I am sure we'll all egg each other on to keep at it when the going gets tough. Come Sunday afternoon we should all be sat outside Dove House Hospice with a cool beer in our hands. That is the plan at least."

Martin Dixon Ltd has worked closely with Dove House Hospice over the past 12 months, having recently carried out works to install a new solar PV and heating control system to substantially reduce electricity bills, and generate extra income for the charity through Government incentives in the years to come.

It is also supporting Life for a Kid, as Martin's son Kirk, who used to play for Hull FC and played for Castleford Tigers in last Sunday's Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, is a patron of the charity.

The Hull-based charity supports children under the age of 16 by offering funds and equipment to help them lead a better life, and also helps children who require life-saving or life changing operations.

Becky Baynes, fundraising coordinator at Dove House Hospice, said: "Martin Dixon and his company have been involved with the hospice for many years and are incredibly supportive.

"Since 2010, they have raised more than £11,000 for Dove House Hospice through various events and challenges, and quite a lot of it contributed to the expansion and redevelopment of the hospice, including our new day therapy unit.

"We are so pleased Martin still wants to support the hospice with our annual running costs and we wish the team all the best for the weekend."

Dean Hoggard, head of operations at Life for a Kid, said: "It's amazing they have picked us as one of the charities.

"To bike that far for charity is amazing. We are still quite a small charity, so to have such a big event linked to such a great company helps raise the profile of Life for a Kid, as well as raising money."

People can still support the team by donating to both charities through the company's Just Giving page, at

Client Testimonials

Laurence Garton, Yorkare Homes

Martin Dixon projects we are involved in we find that the quality of there workmanship is excellent and we rarely find any snagging items. Their employees (on site) are very approachable to discuss the works they are undertaking and have great knowledge of the project in hand and services they are installation.

Allan Whitehead, site manager, South Cave CE Primary School

Martin Dixon Ltd were brilliant. They stood out ahead of all other firms we looked at across the country as they could offer us the complete package. It was great to use an established local company with the expertise to deliver this for us, and throughout their time on site they were superb. Financially, the savings and extra income will allow us to run the school for a year at no cost to us.

Janet Huscroft, Headteacher, Hook CE Primary School

I was introduced to the work of Martin Dixon at an awareness raising meeting organised by the local NAHT Association. They installed LED lighting throughout the school. The work was promptly carried out during the summer break of 2015, we are delighted with the results. I would have no hesitation in recommending Martin Dixon as a company to fulfil what they promise.

Alison Risebury, School Business Manager, Swinefleet Primary School

After just having had our LED lights fitted in school this week, I just wanted to get in touch to say thankyou to Martin Dixon for the work you did. All lights are now changed making a massive difference to the lighting within our school and hopefully to our electrical costs! Many thanks for the level of service that you have given us.
