Max aiming to sink his rivals and be crowned National Apprentice Plumber of the Year

Martin Dixon Ltd's Max Butler is aiming to sink his rivals from across the country and be crowed the UK’s top apprentice plumber this week.

Having impressed his tutor with his skills on his NVQ level 3 course, Hull College took the plunge and entered Max into the Copper Initiative National Apprentice of the Year competition, putting him up against some of the best young talent in the country.

He came through with flying colours when up against students from six other colleges across the North East in the regional heats, and if he can repeat his success in the two-day national final, he’ll take the title of ‘National Apprentice Plumber of the Year’.

In winning his regional heat earlier this year, Max was required to fit a toilet, wash basin and shower in a six-hour period. He and his rivals were each marked on the quality and neatness of their work, having to meet strict criteria with regards measurements and pipe placement.

Despite taking a cautious approach, Max still finished an hour-and-a-half quicker than any of his rivals, and to a much higher standard, claiming first spot and qualifying for the national final.

Now, his skills will be put to the ultimate test when he and five other regional heat winners go head to head.

“If I work as well as I did in the regional heat, I’ll hopefully stand a good chance,” Max said.

“When we first started in the regional heat I was very nervous. We were all placed in our own private working areas and we were given guidelines as to how accurate our plumbing had to be in terms of the distances pipes were from the walls to prevent scarring and burning, and of course we had to ensure our bends were straight and not knotted at all.

“As I knew we were going to be marked on our neatness, I just tried to take my time and make sure all of my work was accurate and tidy, and to the required measurements.

“I was surprised to have finished so much earlier than the others, and that was a bit of a worry, but to then be named the winner was amazing.

“I’m sure I’ll be coming up against some very good plumbers in the final, but I’ll give it my best shot. It would be great to win it as Martin Dixon have been very supportive throughout my apprenticeship and this has been a great opportunity for me.”

Max’s tutor at Hull College, Barry Sprick, says he knew he had a great chance of reaching the finals when entering him for the competition.

He said: “Max is a talented lad and he has done very well to reach the final.  Colleges are urged to enter their best talent into this completion, and we have always selected the people in previous years that we have felt capable, but Max is the first to ever make the final.

“If he stays calm and puts his skills to use in the final situation, he has a good chance of being the overall winner.”

Martin Dixon, managing director of Martin Dixon Ltd, said all at the company are wishing Max well for the final.

“Businesses like ours always need to be helping the next generation of workers to come through, so it has been a delight to have Max with us through an apprenticeship,” he said.

“Max is a great example to other young people as being someone who is willing to work hard and commit to learning his trade. He is a valued team member here already and we have been delighted to support him in this competition.

Organiser Celia Matthews said: “Students get a lot out of the competition. They make new friends, gain more confidence in their abilities and enjoy the challenge. The regional heats are exciting, but the final certainly shows the competitive side of the entrants.

“They are all very focused on winning the title. I wish them all the best of luck.”

Client Testimonials

Laurence Garton, Yorkare Homes

Martin Dixon projects we are involved in we find that the quality of there workmanship is excellent and we rarely find any snagging items. Their employees (on site) are very approachable to discuss the works they are undertaking and have great knowledge of the project in hand and services they are installation.

Allan Whitehead, site manager, South Cave CE Primary School

Martin Dixon Ltd were brilliant. They stood out ahead of all other firms we looked at across the country as they could offer us the complete package. It was great to use an established local company with the expertise to deliver this for us, and throughout their time on site they were superb. Financially, the savings and extra income will allow us to run the school for a year at no cost to us.

Janet Huscroft, Headteacher, Hook CE Primary School

I was introduced to the work of Martin Dixon at an awareness raising meeting organised by the local NAHT Association. They installed LED lighting throughout the school. The work was promptly carried out during the summer break of 2015, we are delighted with the results. I would have no hesitation in recommending Martin Dixon as a company to fulfil what they promise.

Alison Risebury, School Business Manager, Swinefleet Primary School

After just having had our LED lights fitted in school this week, I just wanted to get in touch to say thankyou to Martin Dixon for the work you did. All lights are now changed making a massive difference to the lighting within our school and hopefully to our electrical costs! Many thanks for the level of service that you have given us.
