Swanland School Goes Green... and Makes Big Savings

PUPILS at Swanland Primary School are set to learn about the benefits of converting to green energy – thanks to the installation of a new environmentally friendly wood-burning boiler which will heat the entire school.

Students Alfie Lyne and Georgia Ellis, both 10, were on hand as engineers fired the new biomass system into life, just in time to meet the increasing demand of the winter months.

Staff and pupils from Swanland Primary School discuss how wood-pellets power the new biomass boiler, with Martin Dixon’s business development manager Frank Saunders.

It follows an investment by the school to replace its old, costly oil-fuelled boiler system, moving into the modern era by choosing to heat the school through the latest in renewable heating technology.

Thanks to Government incentives, which reward those who turn to renewable energy sources, and a reduction in energy bills of around 50 per cent a year, the school can expect to recover its outlay in around seven years.

From that point on, with incentives lasting a further 13 years as the Government looks to meet strict EU targets on renewable energy use, the school will be raising its own funds through its own energy plant.

Headteacher Chris Huscroft said: “Our old boiler was running off oil and was in a state of disrepair. It would have cost us a large amount to get that fixed, and it was clear that the cost of running off oil was too high to maintain going forward, so we started to look at other options, particularly renewable energy,” he said.

“Once we looked into what a biomass boiler could bring in terms of savings on our bills, and the guaranteed income generation over a 20 year period, we knew it was an ideal option for a school of our size.”

The boiler, which burns thousands of wood pellets to form heat, was installed by Martin Dixon Ltd. It will need to be topped up five times a year, but apart from that, will burn continuously.

The boiler house, which is situated at the front of the school.

Frank Saunders, business development manager at Martin Dixon Ltd, said: “It is very rewarding for our business to be working with local schools on renewable energy projects such as this.

“We know the systems we put in place for them will bring big financial rewards over the years to come.

“We have now worked with both South Cave and Swanland schools and they have been very forward thinking in their approach. We appreciate schools work to tight budgets, but that is why turning to green energy is a great option. It is about educating people to take the right option.

“Converting to biomass brings big savings on bills, which are continuing to rise rapidly when using oil, and guaranteed income for 20 years. It is also a very modern, hands-on educational project for students to learn about the renewables sector, which of course is huge in the area at present.”

Client Testimonials

Laurence Garton, Yorkare Homes

Martin Dixon projects we are involved in we find that the quality of there workmanship is excellent and we rarely find any snagging items. Their employees (on site) are very approachable to discuss the works they are undertaking and have great knowledge of the project in hand and services they are installation.

Allan Whitehead, site manager, South Cave CE Primary School

Martin Dixon Ltd were brilliant. They stood out ahead of all other firms we looked at across the country as they could offer us the complete package. It was great to use an established local company with the expertise to deliver this for us, and throughout their time on site they were superb. Financially, the savings and extra income will allow us to run the school for a year at no cost to us.

Janet Huscroft, Headteacher, Hook CE Primary School

I was introduced to the work of Martin Dixon at an awareness raising meeting organised by the local NAHT Association. They installed LED lighting throughout the school. The work was promptly carried out during the summer break of 2015, we are delighted with the results. I would have no hesitation in recommending Martin Dixon as a company to fulfil what they promise.

Alison Risebury, School Business Manager, Swinefleet Primary School

After just having had our LED lights fitted in school this week, I just wanted to get in touch to say thankyou to Martin Dixon for the work you did. All lights are now changed making a massive difference to the lighting within our school and hopefully to our electrical costs! Many thanks for the level of service that you have given us.
